River Writing & Sculpting 2010
featuring Santa Clara Pueblo artist Roxanne Swentzell

Create Yourself Anew!

2010 River Writing and Sculpting Adventure for Women.  Enjoy 5 days/ 4 nights in beautiful Westwater Canyon on the famous Colorado River, deemed a favorite of National Geographic.  The trip is led by the West’s premier outfitter Sheri Griffith Expeditions out of Moab Utah. Winner!  Best of State 2008!  All the comforts are included and the Sheri Griffith Expeditions women guides are some of the best in the world: fun, talented, professional and inspiring.

This special trip explores writing and sculpting
as complementary forms of creative expression. Explore the realm of writing and sculpting, using river clay and materials gathered from the landscape, with Page, Roxanne, and Rose. Whether journaling or writing professionally, an established artist or just an aficionado, the natural world unleashes powerful creative energy in all of us. The women who participate in these trips have diversified backgrounds; some are experienced writers and artists, many are not. Some have rafted before, many have not. But all share the desire for a creative adventure in the wilderness with other women. We've purposely selected this later trip date in order to synchronize the river's more relaxed, late-season rhythm with the slower pace of the creative journey.

I can't begin to tell you how much this trip meant to me - how transformational it was. Your wise and gentle spirit created the space for an amazing experience. I am in awe of the guides. I am beyond awe of Roxanne and Rose... Bette, 2009 trip

Note from Page: Roxanne and Rose are my guests on this five-day journey and though we will be with clay and words the entire time, this is not a workshop.  It is about the gifts of inspiration and rejuvenation that we share with each other and that come to us like the river—in gentle waves that wash the outer world away and let us see more deeply into the heart of our creativity.

How Do We Spend Our Days?

Isolated from modern civilization, the red cliff walls tower 2000 feet overhead, touching that flawless Western blue sky.  Here the famous Colorado River flows freely, undammed and untamed. The first three days are spent floating on calm water, giving us time to explore the creative world of writing and working with clay. Campsites on beautiful beaches along the riverbank are remote so we carry with us all the comforts we'll need for our stay in the natural world. Every camp is pristine with only a few footprints of birds, animals or other travelers who pass this way.  We’ll explore the creative world of writing and sculpting each day— when we’re at camp, when we stop along the banks of the river, and as our rafts float between the canyon walls.  Spontaneous discussions will unfold as questions bubble to the surface. We will have a “layover” camp where we stay in the same camp for 2 nights. There’ll be ample time for writing facilitation, resting, hiking, swimming, sculpting, and journaling, then dinner and the chance to share stories under the stars.  As we approach the rapids on Day Four, with our river sculptures and journals safely tucked away, we'll be eager for some whitewater adventure!

Invite a friend! No previous writing, sculpting, or rafting experience required.

“Last night I spent more time reading Writing Down the River and reveled all over again in our own amazing experience. The spiritual connection with the river and the natural world resonates with me. I was especially touched by your work—the intimate and personal as well as the story of your experience in Lava Falls.” – Lorraine, 2009 trip (she was celebrating her 80th!)

I had a wonderful time on the trip. I haven't stopped thinking about the canyon walls, the river, bathing in the river and feeling the mud on the banks between my toes. Thank you for making the trip possible. Eliana, 2009 trip
