This special 20th anniversary trip explores writing and sculpting as complementary forms of creative expression, and celebrates the return to the river of renowned sculptor, Roxanne Swentzell as Page’s featured guest. During this six-day trip, Roxanne will guide us in sculpting with our hands, using river clay and materials gathered from the land, and Page will guide us in sculpting with words.
Whether you journal or write professionally, are an established artist or a collector of Roxanne’s work, the natural world unleashes powerful creative energy. The women who participate in these trips have diversified backgrounds; some are experienced writers and artists, many are not. Some have rafted before, many have not. But all share the desire for a creative adventure in the wilderness with other women. We've purposely selected this later trip date in order to synchronize the river's more relaxed, late-season rhythm with the slower pace of the creative journey.
More about Roxanne Swentzell
Roxanne Swentzell is a world-renowned clay sculptor from the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. Recognition for her award-winning art began when she was in her early twenties, and include the 2016 Heard Museum’s Spirit of the Heard Award, Best of Sculpture Award and Market’s Creative Excellence Award in Sculpture at the Santa Fe Indian Market, and a New Mexico Living Treasure Award. Her sculptures are widely exhibited in such places as the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the White House in Washington, D.C., and the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ. Permanent installations include Cartier in Paris, Santa Fe Convention Center in New Mexico, Museum of Wellington in New Zealand, and the Denver Art Museum in Colorado. Her figures represent a full range of emotions and irrepressible moods, and focus on interpretative female portraits attempting to bring back the balance of power between the male and female inherently recognized in her own Pueblo culture.
More about Our River Writing Journey
Outfitted by Sheri Griffith Expeditions, everything river-trip related for this women-only adventure is provided—professional women guides, oar boats, tents, sleeping bags, and fresh healthy meals. The guides do all the cooking, and row the rafts. Float past the stunning geological features and cultural history of Canyonlands National Park, capturing insights and reflections in your journals. Swim in the Colorado River's warm waters or have fun paddling inflatable kayaks in the moderate rapids. Each evening at camp, beneath a desert sky full of heavenly stars, we’ll join Page and Roxanne for inspiring conversations. Campsites on beautiful beaches along the riverbank are remote so we carry with us all the comforts we'll need for our stay in the natural world. Every camp is pristine with only a few footprints of birds, animals or other travelers who pass this way.

|Note from Page: My special friend Roxanne is my guest on this six-day journey and though we will be interacting with clay and words the entire time, this is not a workshop. It is about the gifts of inspiration and rejuvenation that we share with each other and that come to us like the river—in quiet waves that wash the outer world away and let us see more deeply into the heart of our own creativity.|

"The trip exceeded anything I could have planned for, but then, a heroine must give up all expectations and any sense of control, surrendering to what befalls her. She must trust her instincts and the gifts she has been given. I'm so grateful that we embarked on our heroic journey together. I still wake at night and listen for the river, missing it and that vast and deep (and eventful) sky we got to watch through the nights. I will never forget the beauty and power of the river or all of your open hearts and ready laughs.” - Ellen McLaughlin, Actor and Playwright, New York, Featured Guest 2014
“Page, on the plane for Tulsa—thanks beyond thanks for the opportunity.” -- Joy Harjo, Oklahoma, Crazy Brave River Writing Journey 2013
Page’s river journeys with Sheri Griffith Expeditions were featured in Oprah’s O magazine in 2006 as, “One of the top six great, all-girl getaways of the year!”
