Crazy Brave River Writing Journey
Westwater Canyon, Colorado River, Utah, Women Only
4-days, September 10-13, 2013

This year’s trip honors Creek
musician and writer Joy Harjo,
and her new memoir Crazy Brave.

“Once I was so small I could barely see over the top of the back seat of the black Cadillac my father bought with his Indian oil money…” Joy writes in Crazy Brave. “This was about the time I acquired language, when something happened that changed my relationship to the spin of the world.” Read more at All Things Literary. All Things Natural.

A member of the Mvskoke (Creek) Nation, Joy has authored seven books of poetry, the recent memoir Crazy Brave, and four musical CDs. She is the recipient of the New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas; the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America, and a Native American Music Award (NAMMY) for Best Female Artist of the Year.

“Page, thank you so much for making the rafting trip possible—and wonderful. I've imagined a river trip for years and this exceeded my expectations!” Libby, Washington, August 2012

“This is truly a wonderful adventure—physically, mentally, spiritually. Was so great that our focus was nature, poetry, writing. In spite of sand-in-the-hair, I didn't hear complaints! I will certainly recommend your trips to others. Our co-rafter/writer, my traveling partner, made a number of calls in the car as we drove home, praising the trip to the skies, telling everyone they needed to do it.” Carol Carder, Colorado, August 2012

What is your relationship to “the spin of the world?”

The natural world unleashes powerful creative energy and although this is not a writing workshop, creative discussions will take place at the river's edge and continue throughout the day, ending with readings under the stars. This is a great time to rediscover YOUR relationship to the spin of the world! "I’ve been leading outdoor retreats for women for 16 years,” Page says, “and it’s true, we do re-discover a unique part of ourselves in the natural world. We inspire each other in uniquely feminine ways." This special trip will explore writing as creative expression, but it is not necessary to have any previous writing experience. Journals will be provided and Page provides abundant written material for you to take home and read at your leisure. Personal writing time is woven into the moments between floating down the Colorado River, enjoying optional hikes, or relaxing on shore. And Page is always available for one-on-one visits—the back of the raft is a great place for “free floating consultations.”

How Do We Spend Our Days?

Enjoy 4 days and 3 nights on the famous Colorado River through scenic Westwater Canyon, deemed a favorite of National Geographic. The trip is led by the West’s premier outfitter Sheri Griffith Expeditions out of Moab Utah. All the comforts are included and the Sheri Griffith Expeditions women guides are some of the best in the world: fun, talented, professional and inspiring. Spectacular scenery, a writing adventure, and playful whitewater in warm and sunny southern Utah. Isolated from modern civilization, the red cliff walls tower 2000 feet overhead, touching that flawless western blue sky.

Here the famous Colorado River flows freely, undammed and untamed. The majority of the trip is spent floating on calm water, giving us time to explore the natural creative rhythm of writing and for optional, moderate hikes. Free-flowing facilitation occurs throughout the trip as the rafts float between canyon walls, as we stop and hike to scenic lookouts and through secret canyons, and in the evenings and mornings while we relax at camp and enjoy the natural beauty and rhythm of the canyon. As we approach the rapids we'll be eager for some whitewater adventure. Campsites on beautiful beaches along the riverbank are remote so we carry with us all the comforts we'll need for our stay in the natural world. Every camp is pristine with only a few footprints of birds, animals or other travelers who pass this way.

“Last night I spent more time reading Writing Down the River and reveled all over again in our own amazing experience. The spiritual connection with the river and the natural world resonates with me. I was especially touched by your work—the intimate and personal as well as the story of your experience in Lava Falls.” – Lorraine, 2009 trip (she was celebrating her 80th!)

I had a wonderful time on the trip. I haven't stopped thinking about the canyon walls, the river, bathing in the river and feeling the mud on the banks between my toes. Thank you for making the trip possible. Eliana, 2009 trip

“When I got home, my husband said he didn’t
know what you did to me, but do it again!
He loved the woman who came home to him.”
